AL GUARINO

Dear Giovanni,I was happy to receive your response to my inquiry about our possible Ponza connection...
I visited Ponza a little less than one year ago as I have an aunt and uncle that live there. My aunt is my father's sister and her name is Antoinetta Guarino. My uncle's name is Antonio and they live on Via Guarini. My parents lived in New York, the South Bronx, where I am from originally but I now live and am sending this to you from Santa Monica, California, which is basically, as you probably know, Los Angeles. My father, Liberato, was from Ponza and came to NY I believe around l925 - l930, I was never sure of the year. My grandfather's name was Joseph Coppa and his wife was Antoinetta. I have many relatives with the last names of Coppa and Mazzella. They were all from Ponza. Your father probably knows my aunt and uncle...when I went to Ponza for the first time, I never told anyone I was coming. They had never met me and I had no idea where I was going. I arrived on the island...started to walk around...had some coffee, had some beer, and kept asking if any of the cafe owners knew of the Guarinos and they all did...they kept pointing to the top of this hill. To make a long story short, I kept walking up the road and at the top an old man passes me and says he is looking for an American...and I say I'm looking for an Italian. You know the rest! It's my uncle. Everyone of the bartenders had called the house to tell him there was an American looking for him.
I'll speak to my brother tonight to see if he can shed any light on this. As I said in my other e-mail, my father organized the San Silverio festival in the Bronx for about 40 years until the neighborhood dictated otherwise in the late 70's.
I also had an aunt, Assunta Bosso, from Ponza. I believe her maiden name was Mazzella but I could be mistaken. My aunt has a son who lives on Ponza also. His name is Silverio Guarino and he's about 40-45 years old.
I'm interested in how this turns out...Perhaps we'll be sharing a table on Ponza before too long.
All the best and thanks for getting back to me.
Sincerely Al Guarino

Abaut Ponza
Dear Giovanni,
Saw the pictures of Dover Plains. It was nice to see "San Silverio on the Web".
All my relatives left Ponza more than 30 years ago, but I'll try to piece together a family history for you.
On my father's side, My Grandmother was Carmela (Scotti) Conte. She married my grandfather, Andrew Conte about 1920 or so and came to America. They had 5 children: Millie, Tony, Livia (Lee), Mario & Susie. Tony Conte is my father. He lives part of the year in Cape Coral.
My Aunt Susie married Nando Conte (from Ponza also). Nando inherited a house on Ponza. He and my Aunt Sue spend their summers in Ponza. He left Ponza in the early 50's or so. My other Aunts (Lee & Millie) also married Ponzese.
My Grandma Carmeline's brother, Sam Scotti, had 2 sons from one of his marriages, John & Dadone (sp??). John lived on Ponza till about 1962 (he must have been about 18 or so then). Dadone still lives on Ponza. John went back to Ponza briefly about 30 years ago, then came back to America. He now lives in Michigan.
My mother, Marie, was born in Ponza back in the late 20's, but only lived there until she was 5 or so. Her maiden name was also Conte, although she was not related to my father. Her mother was Filomena (Malliacho) Conte, and my grandfather was Andre Conte. My mother had 4 brothers, Nick, Vincent, John & Andrew. John & Andrew married my Aunts Claudia & Anna. They were both from Ponza and sisters. (I don't know what their maiden family name was). They were both married in the early 60's. Claudia & Anna's mothers name is Sylvia. She was in America during the mid 70's but I believe has returned to Ponza. Claudia & Anna have a relative, Vito Coppa, who lives in Providence, RI. Any relation?
Well, I hope this rambling narrative gives you a few familiar names. Let me know about your family when you get a chance.
Andy Conte

Hi
I was "playing" on the web, and put in the name of the island where my family came from ..Ponza and your web page came up.
My grandfather Anthony Conte from White Plains, New York did a lot for the shrine in Dover. In fact I think he is in the picture with the men carrying the statue.
Never been to Ponza, this is truly the 1st time I saw so many pictures of the island ( sort of makes me want to go).
I do have a few pictues here from very old post cards that I have from my family (you may already have them) if you would like I can scan them here and send them to you.

Hello, My name is Jack Mazzella I am one of the son's of Silvero (Sylvester) Mazzella. I now live in Prescott Arizona. Dear Mr. Coppa:
It was a pleasure to see a Web page on Ponza on the internet. As a long time "forestiero" in Ponza, this has brought fond memories of years past (1950 to 1988) in Ponza, where I used to spend my holydays at my father's house (casa Fontana in Sopra la Croce, you should know the place...) Now living in Canada, I hope I shall have some day an opportunity to come back, you'll never know. Stay in touch, and all the best to you and to other friends I may still have in the island.

Sandro Vitiello

Ciao Giovanni
Ti saluto
Ciao Sandro

DiMeglio Family

Giovanni,
My name is Pete and I married a beautiful Italian woman named Carol DiMeglio. Carol's father, Ulysses DiMeglio, is from the Island of Ponza and he has asked me to contact you regarding any relatives of his still on the Island. Let me give you some history.
Carmino DiMeglio married Filomena Riviecchio on Ponza. They lived in LeForne. They had two children, Ulysses (born 1921) and Anna (born a few years later). Filomena had at least 2 cousins. Their names are Asunta Riviecchio (maiden name) and Antonieta Riviecchio (maiden name). Ulysses remembers fishing with Aniello Riviecchio (his uncle) until he left the Island for America in approximately 1935 with his mother and sister. His father Carmino left the Island several years before 1935 to prepare a home in America for them.
Carmino DiMeglio died in America at the age of 82 in 1978. His wife Filomena died in America at the age of 80 in 1980. Ulysses lives in the state of New Jersey and his sister Anna lives in the state of Florida.
Ulysses married a beautiful Italian women (Asunta) and have two sons (Carmine, Joseph) and a daughter (Carol). Ulysses and Asunta have 9 grandchildren.

San Silverio Photos and Dover Plains
Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 18:43:24 -0400
Thank you for the pages of the shrine to San Silverio. I brought them all up this afternoon!
Although I grew up in Dover Plains I never had the opportunity to visit the shrine but our family was always curious. We were a devout Catholic family that attended St. Charles Borromeo in Dover and my sister and I went to Catholic school in Amenia and then to Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie.
We lived just north of Lime Kiln Road, under East Mountain, which was only a few miles from San Silverio shrine and often travelled past the site of the shrine. When the entrance was first constructed in the '60s the curiosity generated was almost to much to bear. I was about 10 years old but I distinctly remember my mother wanting to visit the shrine. We used to travel all over to visit shrines but we couldn't go to the one in our "back yard!" We never understood the background of the Shrine to San Silverio but we longed to see it but never have..except for the entranceway.
I recall that there was a very poor but proud woman who lived in an ramshackle house near the entrance to the shrine. Her name was Jenny Scutt and she would walk to Dover Plains and borrow books from the library where my mother volunteered. She was very old then but still made the walk each week.
Before the shrine was built I vaguely remember riding in a truck through the fields (they were fields in the late 1950's!) just to the South (Wingdale side) of the shrine. There were Boy Scouts from Camp Siwanoy camping in the back of these fields. Is there a quarry in this area? I can't remember for sure.
Across the road from the south end of the shrine was a family named Pitts. They also used the library frequently and had a fine looking daughter as I recall.
Dover Plains was a fine town to grow up in during the '50,'60s. We rode bicycles all over and fished in the Ten Mile River, built treehouses and cabins and hiked all over the mountains. The only dangers were copperhead snakes and rattlesnakes. I've killed a few, ran over one with my bicycle! As I got got older I learned to respect the little crittwers more and actually led trips up West Mountain to observe live rattlesnakes..never got bit! I even had a "pet" Copperhead for a Summer and then gave it to the Audibon Society in Sharon, CT.
East Mountain, the one behind San Silverio was home to the original town of Dover. On top of this mountain are a series of old cart paths, stone walls, foundations and even a cemetary. Actually it is a "ghost town" that few people ever travelled to. I used to hike up the mountain at Dover and follow the old road toward Wingdale to get to the town. It must have been quite a settlement and I don't know why it was abandoned but I susspect the introduction of the railroad was an important factor.
Well, I better stop meandering but it has truly been a pleasure to take time to recant the fond memories of Dover. San Silverio has always been somewhat of a mystery and I'd appreciate learning more about it.
Also, the photos of Ponza are intriguing! What a beautiful place, don't tell the whole world about it!
The World Wide Web certainly is a fantastic creation!
Thanks again,
Christopher Whalen at Lake Ozonia in the Northern Adirondacks

Subject: San Silverio
Dear Giovanni:
Please, briefly tell me the story of San Silverio.
Was he from Ponza? My grandfather was from Pescara in Abruzzi. I've always wondered where the family name came from. Thanks & Ciao,
Bob DiSilverio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Giovanni: Thanks for your kind response. No, much to my regret, I do not speak Italian. My father is 1st generation American and I 2d generation. My father understands more Italian than he speaks, but he speaks precious little Italian. My grandparents struggled to become good English speakers, and they didn't want their children to face the same struggle. Consequently, my father's generation didn't really learn to speak the language. I've studied Spanish and French in school, so I can sometimes get a little meaning from written Italian. But, my Italian skills are unreliable. Maybe, were I to spend a year or two in Italy... But, that would not be practical just now. Best regards & ciao Bob DiSilverio

Ponza
I found your web page by chance when I looked up Ponza in a search engine. I was looking for information about Ponza because my husband's father came from there. Vittorio Coppa left Ponza in 1927 with his brother Aurelio to come to Australia. They were 15 and 17 years old. Their father Gennaro was the doctor on the island and he was married to Maria D'Atri. My husband Robert is Gennaro's grandson. Do you know this branch of the family? We hope to come and see Ponza in a couple of years. My father-in-law told us such wonderful stories about growing up there. It was such a surprise to see the name 'Coppa' come up on the computer screen. It is very unusual in Australia. I hope to hear from you. I'm sorry the family no longer speaks Italian, much to our shame. Tara Coppa<

Hello Giovanni, I was quite pleased to find this site on the internet. My father Silverio Sandolo was born on Ponza. He is still living and will be 93 year sold this coming June 20th. He is the last living member of his family of 9. Of course we have many cousins still living. I am not sure if any still reside on Ponza. I have traveled to Italy many times but have never visited Ponza. The closest I have gotten is Formia. I can only assume that I have some relatives still on Ponza. Perhaps some day I will be able to make a return visit. Best regards....Augustine Sandolo
